What Can We Do?

Over 40 states have laws on the books that guarantee “educational obscenity exemptions” in public schools. Yes, you read that right! Superintendents, principals, teachers, and school librarians can provide and promote sexually explicit programs and materials for K-12 students without fear of facing prosecution. Read below to find out what you can do to FIND & REMOVE PORN FROM SCHOOLS!

  • First, check online (district and/or school website) for a current list. If this information is unavailable or withheld from you, the next step is to submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain a list of books at your school library. Learn more about FOIA requests at: www.kitchentableactivist.com/resources

  • Most public schools have a procedure in place to remove obscene material, and you can usually find that policy online. Some districts make it more difficult than others, but don’t give up. If you need assistance, please contact Karen at Kengland@capitolresource.org

  • Compare your school library list to CRI's list of the most commonly found obscene books in public school libraries. Visit Take Back the Classroom and select “All Books” to view the list of books CRI staff has uncovered to date. We will continue to curate a comprehensive list that will grow over time, so please check back often. A CRI staffer must personally go through each book, but we will endeavor to bring you timely information.

  • 1. Film or photograph objectionable materials in your library and send this information to CRI.

    2. Share what you found with others verbally, through email, and on social media.

    3. If necessary, file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to learn more about library purchase orders, book selection processes, etc.

    4. Donate to organizations exposing the presence of obscene material in public school libraries.

    5. Purchase and donate books that reflect your family's values. Use CRI's 20% discount code for Brave Books.

  • First, obtain a copy of the full text of current district policy and any applicable state laws. You may find, for example, that anti-obscenity laws already exist but are not observed by district or school personnel.

Secondly, unite with other like-minded parents who also have children in your school. There is power in numbers! We’ve seen schools refuse to review a book challenge submitted by someone who is not a parent of a current student.

Next, you may use our model policy (launching soon!), modify it as needed, and present it to your district superintendent and local school board.

Lastly, become a volunteer in your local school library so you can monitor firsthand what is happening.
